چکیده

Studies on cold acclimation of insects including s ilkworms have shown significant variations in the levels of various biomolecules to cope with thermal shock. The present study has been carried out on cold-stressed larvae of Daba Trivoltine (TV) of tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury to analyze the mortality rate, variations in the biomolecules and excretory products at varied durations. The results revealed that exposure to low temperatures (10±1oC) for seven days leads to 100% mortality, five days exposure caused 50% mortality and two days exposure resulted in 38% mortality on reverting the larvae to normal temperature. The treatment of Daba T.V larvae with low temperatures resulted in increased aminoacid content (2% – 5%) in the haemolymph and decreased in fat body (37% – 94%) of all the three treatments in comparison with control group reared at 28±2oC. Significant decrease in urea (68% – 77%) and uric acid (46% 50%) was observed in the larvae exposed to cold stress in comparison with control group.

Changes in the Haemolymph Cationic Concentration in Larvae of the Silkworm Bombyx mori L. Exposed to Selected High Temperature Regimes

The effects of high temperature on cationic composition of haemolymph of the three selected races of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, viz., PM, NB4D2 and CSR2 during 4 moult and 5 instar larval development were th th investigated. Haemolymph cation levels increased significantly throughout the feeding period from 1 to 6 day st th in all the three races and showed a significant decrease on 7 day. Mg a...

Nutrition of "Glossina morsitans" : metabolism of U-14C threonine during pregnancy

Following injection of U-]4C threonine into the haemolymph of adult female Glossina morsitans during late pregnancy, radioactivity was detected in the postparturient female and in its offspring, in threonine, lipids, and a range of non¬ essential amino acids. The level of radioactivity recovered from the larva was higher than that remaining in the injected adult, and the radioactivity recovered...

More nutritious than delicious

melanogaster show a preference for nutritive sugars (which can be metabolized) over non-nutritive sugars (which offer no nutritive benefit) independently of taste; however, the mechanisms that mediate this preference are unknown. In a recent study, Suh and colleagues show that, in D. melanogaster, neurons expressing Diuretic hormone 44 (Dh44; a homologue of mammalian corticotropin-releasing hor...

Gains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach

By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...
